Our organization, together with an international consortium of partners, has submitted the project TB-SHIELD-WOMEN – Supportive nutritional Health Intervention for Enhanced recovery and Lowered Drug toxicity in vulnerable groups of Women with tuberculosis under the call Call: HORIZON-JU-GH-EDCTP3-2026-01-TB-01-two-stage: Global collaboration action for the development of TB drugs for therapy and chemoprophylaxis in adults and children in sub-Saharan Africa, focused on global collaboration for the development and optimisation of tuberculosis therapies.

The project aims to improve tuberculosis treatment outcomes among vulnerable women in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly those affected by malnutrition, HIV, pregnancy, or postpartum conditions. The proposal includes a multicountry Phase II clinical trial in Uganda, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to evaluate whether targeted nutritional support can enhance recovery, reduce drug toxicity, and improve the safety of current TB treatments.

The consortium brings together partners from Europe and Africa, including Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), R-Evolution Worldwide, Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), Makerere University (Uganda), and the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (DR Congo), combining expertise in infectious diseases, nutrition, and clinical research.

The project has been submitted to the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking programme, which supports international research collaborations to fight infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.
