We are proud to announce the submission of the AIDIA initiative (Artificial Intelligence to Drive Diagnosis Improvement for Africa) under the HORIZON-JU-GH-EDCTP3-2026-03-DIGIT-02 call (“Enhancing integrated research and healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa through digital innovation and Artificial Intelligence”).
The Challenge: Beyond Isolated AI Models
In many sub-Saharan African health systems, visual and microscopic diagnoses for infectious and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) face severe constraints, including a shortage of specialized personnel, high workloads, and a lack of standardized quality assurance.
While various Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have been developed to assist diagnostics, most remain siloed – tested only in controlled environments without clear pathways for transferability across different populations, local devices, or field clinical workflows.
Over a 36-month journey, AIDIA aims to address one of the most critical healthcare bottlenecks in sub-Saharan Africa: accurate and timely diagnostic delivery, following a transformative, African-led approach. Rather than building new AI algorithms from scratch or aiming to replace human expertise, AIDIA establishes an African-led Digital Diagnostic Readiness and Scale-up Framework.
